Jessica Thompson performance: Drawing a Line: Scajaquada Creek
Beyond the Multitude, Curated by Jordan Dalton
Performance begins Thursday, September 23 at 10 am starting at Forest Lawn Cemetery and moving through Buffalo’s East Side.
Scajaquada. The oldest word in use on the Niagara Frontier, and both source for and subject of an exhibition celebrating ecosystem, neighborhood, history, and place through innovative work from regional artists, activists, historians, performers, and practitioners.
Drawing a Line: Scajaquada Creek is a duration-based performance where the artist traces the pathway of a buried section of the Scajacquada using a pushbroom and water from the creek itself. The drawing will begin at Forest Lawn Cemetery and will weave through the Hamlin Park District, along Main, E. Delavan, Jefferson, Florida, Wolhers, Northland, Donaldson, and finally, across the Kensington Expressway.
By redrawing the pathway of the creek, Thompson’s performance reintroduces the Scajacquada to its surroundings by marking its territory. Her piece examines the complexities of Buffalo as site through gesture, ritual and artistic labour.
